The violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini. Paganini was one of the most celebrated musicians of the 19th century. His extraordinary talent and eerie, gaunt appearance led to the popular belief that he had sold his soul to the Devil. So strong was this belief that on his death in 1840 the Catholic Church initially refused to bury him in consecrated ground.
